These photos capture what happens from a mid-winter melt, flooding along the river banks, freezing temperatures return, and the flood waters recede. In February 2017, it froze hard enough and fast enough to create a thick layer of ice that can suspend itself around trees after the flood waters recede to reveal yet another magical creation from Mother Nature. For some in the Red River Valley of North Dakota and Minnesota, this is reminiscent of the winter flood of 1997.
